One of the serious consequences of a wild fire is the ensuing movement of soils on the destabilized service, sometimes leading to large slippage, or 'mass wasting'. The use straw, burlap, straw bales or waddles are important tools for controlling this erosion.
When is it appropriate to use straw bales for protecting burned slopes?

Authorities disagree, but generally straw waddles (long cyclindrical tubes made of straw or other organic, preferably non-seed bearing material), are installed after the fire event and before the rains. Proper installation, using trenching and and stakes, is key to their effectiveness
